References are asked for when you are
seeking a job, or job promotion, or membership in a professional
society or sporting club. They are usually written but can be
given over the phone. Some references can be sent with a job application,
others will be asked for after your job interview. Your referee
will then send the reference to the employer for you.
Your Referees
Employers or club officials ask referees
to supply information to them about you when they are considering
you for a job, or for membership.
This information could be about your
character, your abilities, your special talents - things that
are valuable or commendable about you. You would ask someone to
be your referee for a number of reasons. You might have a friend
or trusted acquaintance write you a reference; someone who has
known you for a long time,
been impressed with your performance,
noted your good character - honesty, integrity, reliability,
observed whatever is relevant in your application,
agreed to give information that supports your application.
Referees are often experienced people
in organisations; people who hold important office or are well
thought of by the employer, professional society or club. This
would be a profession related reference where skills and accreditation
are commented on.
